Reese Witherspoon has dismissed rumors of a feud with “Titanic” star Kate Winslet, calling such talk as “stupidity” as they are very “good friends.”
Through a recent Instagram Story, Witherspoon addressed online claims referencing her one-on-one interview with Will Ferrell for People magazine, in which she said that she was still being “literally haunted” by a memory of a friend “who I really didn’t know very well because she’s a very serious, proper actress.”
In that interview, posted on People‘s YouTube channel, the “Legally Blonde” star was telling Ferrell about having regrets accidentally “roasting” her actress-friend at a proper English acting awards ceremony in which the latter invited her to present, supposedly resulting in the end of their friendship.
“I’ve never been to this ceremony so I thought it was a roast. So I roasted her,” said Witherspoon. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the tone of the ceremony.
“The tone was British, elegant, classy. And I was like, ‘Remember that time when we got laser hair removal?’” she recalled in between fits of laughter. “I’m still embarrassed with that. We’re not friends anymore, I’m not kidding. I think she doesn’t like me anymore.”
Days later following the interview, the internet exploded with insinuations that Witherspoon could be referring to her 2016 Oscar co-presenter Kate Winslet, as her “dear friend” with whom she supposedly had a falling out.
Fans immediately linked Witherspoon’s confession to the time she once honored Winslet, who received Artist of the Year at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards in 2007.
Putting down the fire, the “Cruel Intentions” actress took to social media to dismiss claims of any rift between her and Winslet, adding that people should not believe everything they see and read on the internet.
“Hey guys… I just spoke to my very dear friend for years, Kate W. We laughed about this stupidity. Please do not believe the internet. We are good friends and have never had any falling out,” she wrote alongside a screenshot of an article of her saying that Winslet doesn’t like her anymore.

In a separate story, Witherspoon shared another screenshot of a news item that claimed Winslet was roasted by Witherspoon during the 2007 BAFTA awards, with the caption, “This is completely UNTRUE. So silly!”

A transcript of Witherspoon’s speech about Winslet was retrieved from a fan website, where the former said that she cannot share personal stories about the latter because they were “too bawdy or tawdry or drunken to tell,” including the “really funny thing that happened when they were both in their underwear.”
However, in contrast to Witherspoon’s revelation that she was not friends anymore with the actress she roasted, she and Winslet have appeared together in public right after she honored the latter at BAFTA 2007.
The duo were captured exchanging hugs and kisses during the Academy Awards in 2016, where they also introduced two films that were nominated that year for best picture.
