MANILA, Philippines — Family and friends of the late Filipino movie king Fernando Poey (FPJ) marked the 20th anniversary of his death on Saturday, December 14, by celebrating a mass at the Manila North Cemetery and launching an eco-park in his hometown of San Carlos City, Pangasinan.

Family members in attendance included the entertainment legend’s daughters, Senator Grace Poe and actress Lovi Poe, and his grandson, Brian Poe Llamanzares.

Senator Poe said providing genuine, first-class service to the people is one way to honour FPJ’s legacy of generosity and compassion.

“His idealism and love for the Filipino people remind us to persevere because even simple acts can have an impact in improving the lives of our people,” she wrote in a statement on Sunday.

The Poe family attended a mass at the San Dominic Chapel in San Carlos City before the opening of the FPJ Ecological Park, also known as the San Carlos City Coastal Park in Barangay Boc.

According to Senator Po, the newly opened eco-park is intended to be a tourist attraction, providing an oasis for people to relax and a space for families to gather in the city.

“We are grateful to the local government for naming this landmark after FPJ. Even though he is no longer with us, places like this remind us of FPJ’s love for family reunion and joy,” she said.

“Lolo shows that everyone has the ability to explore, imagine and give back to the country in the path of their choice,” added Bryan, who is also FPJ Panday Bayanihan caucus chair.
