A shocking theft of 100,000 eggs from a trailer in Pennsylvania has authorities scrambling for answers.
The heist, which took place on Saturday evening in Antrim Township, left police puzzled as they investigated the mysterious crime. The eggs were valued at an estimated $40,000, making the incident a serious felony.
The theft occurred at approximately 8:40 pm at Pete & Gerry’s Organics, a well-known organic egg supplier.
Police spokesperson, Trooper First Class Megan Frazer, explained that no leads have come in yet. She urged the public to come forward with any tips or information that might help solve the case.
“This is definitely unique,” Frazer remarked, adding that in her 12 years of service, she has never encountered a crime involving such a large number of eggs, AP said.
Investigators are combing through surveillance footage and following up with any potential witnesses in hopes of identifying the thief.
Pennsylvania Egg Heist Linked to Soaring Prices
The surge in egg prices, largely due to the ongoing bird flu outbreak that has led to the culling of millions of chickens, may be contributing to this unusual crime.
Prices for eggs have soared, and according to the US Department of Agriculture, they are expected to rise by 20% in 2025, further stressing the supply chain.
In December 2024, the average price per dozen eggs hit $4.15, more than double what they cost just a few months earlier.
Pete & Gerry’s Organics has assured the public that they are fully cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation. “We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible,” the company said in a statement.
In the meantime, law enforcement officials are continuing to gather evidence and follow all possible leads.
According to USA Today, the police are urging anyone with information to contact their Chambersburg bureau at 717-264-5161.
With egg prices continuing to rise and shortages affecting consumers across the country, authorities are working hard to crack this case.
