Bobby Garcia, a director and producer with a great reputation in the theater world, has died, his family confirmed through his friend Boy Abunda. He was 55.

Garcia’s death was announced on the December 18 episode of “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,” where the talk show host and entertainment columnist paid tribute to Garcia.

“I want to express my condolences to Bobby Garcia’s family and loved ones,” he said. “Bobby was one of the most beautiful people inside and out and I have never met anyone in my life).”

No cause of death was mentioned.

Abuda said Garcia will be missed and is sure he will go to heaven.

“We’re going to miss you, wherever you are, I know you’re in heaven. But Bobby, I want you to know, you are loved. Thank you so much,” he said.

His last projects include the Request Concert for the Asia Theatre Company and the silent play Request Saladio with Lea Salonga and Dolly DeLeon as alternate leads.

Garcia founded Atlantis Theatre Group in 1999, which its official website describes as “one of Asia’s most prolific and successful theatre companies”. Throughout his career, he has directed more than 50 plays and led the production of 65 productions.

He received his BA from Fordham University in New York and his MFA in Theatre Directing from the University of British Columbia.

His notable stage credits include Dolly Parton’s A Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol in Canada (Arts Club Company) and the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in Manila and Singapore.

Garcia was also assistant director of Miss Saigon in 2000 and 2001 and was one of Cameron Mackintosh’s representatives in selecting the cast for its revival and UK tour. He was also the first show director for the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005.
