MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. is asking scientists to focus on developing solutions to problems, instead of coming up with products and look for users afterwards.
In an interview with the Philippine News Agency, he explained why he made the request:
“Because there are those who develop things and look for people who might benefit from these, trying to look for [a] possible market.”
The secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) believes scientists should think of what stakeholders need instead, and that the solutions should first meet the consumers’ demands.
Solidum emphasized that scientists and businesses can collaborate in investments that will create lasting impact.
He reiterated that the agency has always supported scientists by connecting them with businesses.
“We introduce them to investors,” he said, ensuring that the innovations of the scientists will get commercialized.
In December 2024, the DOST launched the PROPEL program to support Filipino innovators from the startup to the scaling-up phase.
In light of these measures, Solidum urges scientists to avail of government assistance.
Also, he lauded President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s support for the science and technology sector.
“His statements have always included that the decisions of the government should be science-based,” he said.
The DOST’s budget has been increasing steadily. It is focused on these areas in research and development:
